The Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) Monthly Meeting began at 7pm September 12, 2024 with Colleen Powers presiding. Twenty-eight people attended in person, including two new members, Carah Garstka and Cassandra (Cassie) Watters. One person watched the program on-line but could not watch the rest of the meeting.
Program:
This was a Zoom presentation at the Corvallis Museum. Our speaker was Laura Henneberry who demonstrated PreQuilt, a browser-based software for designing quilts. Laura was struggling with a quilt design when her husband said he could make some software to help with that. From that beginning they have developed PreQuilt. The Basic Plan comes with solid colors from 13 different companies for lots of color play, has over 100 preloaded quilt blocks, can save up to 50 quilt designs, and you can upload up to 250 printed fabrics. The Market Plan has all that and more. The Basic Plan is $7.50 a month or $50 per year, and the Market Plan is $10 a month or $100 a year, but you can get 20% off if you order by 9/30 and use a coupon code. Contact Colleen or JC Briar for the code. For more information on Prequilt, see their website, Prequilt.com.
Prequilt vs EQ8:
Susan Clark compared Prequilt with EQ8, another quilt design software app that is now in its 8th iteration. She said Prequilt looked easier to use and was more flexible in its use of color. EQ8 has over 5,000 blocks, can save many more quilt designs, but takes a while to master. Prequilt is a subscription service, whereas EQ8 is purchased.
Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show:
Colleen showed photos from the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. 2025 is the 50th anniversary of the show and there will be special exhibits for the occasion. Consequently, there won’t be space for our guild to exhibit but we anticipate being there in 2026.
October 10 Monthly Meeting:
This is our annual business meeting. We will have elections and a summary of our finances. The nominees are President – Colleen Powers (returning), Vice-president – Alice Marshall (new), Treasurer – Sara Power (new), Secretary – Marty Stowers (new), Membership – Joyce Loper (returning). There will also be a presentation on Pojagi, a Korean form of patchwork and quilting.
Appointed positions:
Hand sewing group – Pattie Dix, In-person sew days – Diana Finkenaur, Virtual sew days – Pattie Dix and Susan Clark, Book club – Pattie Dix, Community Giving – Mieke Vandenreek, Wesite – Ann Geyer, Social Media (New!) – JC Briar.
Volunteer opportunities:
The guild needs people to lead the following: Swaps & Challenges, Ultimate Finisher, and Library of Things (previously called the Ruler Library). It would be best if the person with the Library of Things was somebody centrally located in Corvallis and who regularly attends meetings and/or in-person sew days. JC is willing to do this if nobody else volunteers.
QuiltCon Quilt:
JC Briar is leading this project. The quilt top is done. Five different names had been proposed for the quilt and Steampunk Tulip was the favorite among attendees. Attendees were also given an opportunity to propose quilt designs for the quilt.
Quiltopia:
This is an annual quilt show held in Salem on the first Friday-Saturday in November (Nov 1,2, 2024). They have encouraged us to enter quilts. There is an interesting challenge, to make a quilt wall-hanging inspired by a book. But it must use some fabrics from a fabric packet sold by Good Vibes Quilt Shop, be 22 by 30 inches in size, have a hanging sleeve, and be submitted by Sept 20. The fabric packet is available online. See QuiltopiaOregon.com for details.
Show and Tell:
Two people had quilts for the Collage Challenge. Ten others had S&T items, including one who had a quilt for the Quiltopia challenge.
Book Club:
The book club meets monthly via Zoom at 7pm on the fourth Wednesday of the month, which is September 25. The September book is The Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths. The October book is The Maid, by Nita Prose. Sign up through the website if you wish to participate.Â
