The Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) Monthly Meeting was a hybrid meeting via Zoom and in-person at the Corvallis Community Center. It started at 7pm, Oct 13, 2022, with Missy and Camille presiding. There were 19 in-person attendees and 6 Zoom attendees.
Election: This was the annual business meeting that the club is required to have. We also elected officers. Our incoming elected officers are co-presidents – Camille Ainsworth and Diana Finkenaur, treasurer – Andrea Tribolet, and secretary – Nancy Mandel. Appointed positions are web master – Ann G, membership – Pattie D, ruler library – Ann G, raffle prizes – Nancy M, book club – Missy C, social media – Aimie H, community quilts – Janet K, ultimate finisher – Lorna M, and swaps – Susan S.
Name Tags: We have been using stick-on/throw away name tags. It would be better if each of us made a re-useable name tag or used the one we made during a meeting a few years ago. There are instructions on-line to make name tags.
Help with meeting setup: We need members to help with room setup and refreshments (cookies). We rent the room for two hours, 6:30 to 8:30 and would like the first ½ hour to be social time, so we must be prompt with setup and take down. Pattie D sent around a signup sheet.
Raffle winners: Chris S and Diana F were this month’s raffle winners.
Sew Powerful purse program: JC B informed us about this program and has made some lovely purses for it. Sewists in the US and beyond make small purses which are sent to Zambia where they are filled with reusuable menstrual products and given to schoolgirls, enabling them to remain in school all month long. Women in Zambia are employed to make the products that fill the purses. JC will send an email with more information, or you can look at the Sew Powerful website.
Community Quilt: The next community quilt has pinwheel blocks in various sizes and features a blue-print fabric. Blocks were due on Sept 30.
Quiltcon Quilt: Every year our guild participates in a quilt challenge sponsored by the Modern Quilt Guild. Together we make a quilt which is displayed at the national convention (Quiltcon) in February. Diana F is leading this project and many people brought their blocks to the meeting and gave them to her. She needs them by Oct 22. She will sew the blocks together and Barb of Bolts to Blocks will do the quilting. A photo of the quilt needs to be sent to Quiltcon by Dec 15.
November 10 Meeting: The November meeting is always a make-and-take meeting where we make a craft during the meeting. If anybody has any ideas what we could do this year, please contact Camille.
December 8 Meeting: The December meeting is a holiday party where we do a special swap (see Holiday Swap) and dine together. This year it will be in the Corvallis Community Center and will be a potluck.
Holiday Swap: Each participant will make a mini-quilt (96 to 144 inches perimeter) in the theme and shape their recipient chooses. Recipients will be chosen at random by Elfster on Oct 28. You will know who you’re giving a quilt to, but you won’t know who is making a quilt for you. Members have until Oct 27 to sign up. Camille will send out details.
Block of the Month (BOTM): Lorna is leading this activity. We are making blocks from the book Quilt Improv by Lucie Summers. Our eighth block is Log Cabin on page 28. Participants will display their blocks during show-and-tell in November. Colleen P has completed all the blocks and sewn them into a quilt top! She displayed it during show-and-tell.
Sew Days: The club has two Sew Days a month, one online via Zoom on the second Saturday of the month, and one in-person at Consumer Power on the 4th Saturday. Our next Sew Days are in-person on Oct 22, and online on Nov 12. Because of Thanksgiving there will be no in-person Sew Day in November.
Show-and-tell: Fourteen members had show-and-tell items this month. Please send photos of show-and-tell items for the November meeting to CMQGphotos@gmail.com .
Book Club: The book club meets monthly at 7pm on the last Wednesday of the month which is Oct 26. This month’s book is The Anomaly by Herve le Tellier. Next month’s book is The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. Contact Missy if you wish to participate.
Hand Sewing Group: The Hand Sewing group will meet on Nov 6 at Pattie D’s home from 10am to 1pm. It was held outside this summer but will be indoors in November. Contact Pattie for more information.
The meeting ended at 8:10. Submitted by Nancy Mandel, secretary
