The May meeting of the Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) was conducted at the Corvallis Museum. Colleen, President, convened the meeting at 7:00 p.m. with 39 members in attendance. Joyce, Membership Chair, welcomed new CMQG members Kingsley, Jenn, Karen N., and Mitch. Joyce explained to the guild the process that members should follow to indicate preferences for photos to be shared on social media. A red dot placed on your name badge will indicate that no picture should be used.
Guild Leaders Seaside Retreat Report
Colleen, Alice, Sara, and Marty each shared an example of how we are confirming our guild vision. One of the key elements mentioned was bringing joy to quilting and the membership. It was noted that in the near future, opportunities will become available for members to volunteer for new positions within the guild. These positions should aid in the guild’s growth and development.
Member Spotlight
Carah was introduced to quilting at the age of seven by her mother, who was a traditional quilter. Around 1989, Carah moved towards more modern quilting, using lots of color in her projects. She enjoyed using traditional blocks in non-traditional forms. Carah loves quilt math, batiks, and designing quilt patterns. She is currently exploring how to integrate dyeing fabrics into her quilting process.
Sara Power
Sara started quilting in 1971. Sara is a self-taught quilter, and her first quilt was a Lone Star pattern. In 1990, Sara moved to Colorado with a box of scrap fabrics and the intention of using the scraps to make quilts. Sara did make quilts. However, she returned to Oregon with many more boxes of scrap fabrics. Sara enjoys making quilts that challenge her skills and thought processes. She is currently exploring a quilting challenge sponsored by the MQG. She encouraged others to use the MQG site as it contains an abundance of useful information.
Program
Member Karen Cunagin, Millefleurs Fiber Art, taught fiber arts for thirty years in the San Diego area. She enjoys uncommon quilts for the wall. Karen’s lecture, My Ten Best Ideas, was both entertaining and educational. Karen offered tips regarding laundering and storage of fabrics, portable design walls, thread choice, basting, binding, labels, and storage of finished quilts. In addition, members were treated to a delightful trunk show of Karen’s unique quilts. She interspersed stories about her quilts and her helpful tips throughout the enjoyable trunk show. A PDF of Karen’s ”All My Best Ideas for Quilting” will be available for download in the Resources section of the guild’s website.
Get ’Er Done Project
Several members showed their completed #1 project on their Get ’Er Done list. The names of the May Get ’ER Done participants will be placed in the final cash drawing to be held in December. Members may still join in the fun and be entered into the drawing for cash at the end of the year and have the satisfaction of finishing projects. To participate in the Get ’Er Done Project, contact Candy. The project number drawn to be completed by the June meeting is #2.
All Members Group
Our new way to communicate within the guild membership is the All Member Group on our website. Ann is still adding people to the group. Instruction reminder: When you get a notice from a group post in your email, DO NOT REPLY to the email, as only guild board members will see the reply. You must click on the link ”View Post” which takes you to the group within our website and you reply to the post within the group. You can also log in to the group on our website and find the post directly from the members group area.
Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show 2026
President Colleen submitted the guild’s application to the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Special Exhibit in 2026. The goal for CMQG is to submit 10 to 20 quilts in the exhibit. The unifying theme of the displayed CMQG quilts is ”Honoring the Woman Farmer.” With this theme in mind, the quilts will be honoring women’s contributions to farming and anything evoking agriculture (plants, animals, soil, water). Displayed quilts should be within a 24 to 36 inch size range and should incorporate at least one modern quilt element. In order to maintain cohesiveness, a color palette will be presented for the challenge at a future date. A committee, not the board members, will be formed to select which quilts will be included in the exhibit if we have more than 20 submissions. We will have this challenge even if we are not accepted into the Sisters show.
QuiltCon 2025
The 2025 CMQG QuiltCon quilt will be displayed in Sisters, OR, for the entire month of July as part of a business sponsorship for the Sisters quilt show event.
Donation Quilts
Members wishing to obtain a quilt kit for a donation quilt may contact Colleen or Mieke. The guild has been offered the opportunity to donate 14-16 quilts to Red Feather Ranch. These quilts will be given to women veterans at a retreat held in late May. We currently have 13 quilts to donate for the women veterans and could use another 2 or 3. If you have a quilt to donate for this event, please contact Colleen, Mieke, or Alice. Please note that there are no size restrictions on the donated quilt, and it does not need to be a Quilt of Valor theme.
Library of Things
JC reminded members that items in the Library of Things are available for members to borrow. She has added some rulers, quilting rulers, templates, and three sets of different color cards (AGF, Kona, and Moda Bella) to the library. Members were reminded that a spreadsheet of available items in the Library of Things can be found on the guild’s website under the general resources section. The spreadsheet includes a photo along with a description of the item and the manufacturer. To check out or return items, come to a meeting, Sew Day, or contact JC.
Show and Tell
Various members of the group shared their delightful quilting projects. In addition, members showed their scrappy triangles for the CMQG 2025 Block of the Month Challenge and their Get ’Er Done projects.

The ZOOM book club event will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. The club will be reviewing The Girl Who Wrote in Silk by Kelli Estes. Looking ahead, the June title will be All of Us Are Broken by Fiona Cummins.
