March 13, 2025

The March meeting of the Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) was conducted at the Benton County Historical Museum in Corvallis. President Colleen convened the meeting at 7:00 p.m. with approximately 40 members in attendance. Joyce, Membership Chair, welcomed new CMQG members Emilia, Cathy, Cindi, Cynthia, and Karen. When each new member was introduced, they briefly shared information about themselves. Joyce also welcomed guests: Karen, Kingsley, Lin, Luann, Marilyn, and Mary. Joyce announced that the guild currently has 74 members who have paid dues for 2025. She thanked all who have renewed their memberships. Joyce informed the guild that a new system will be initiated for members to indicate preferences for photos to be shared on social media. A red dot placed on your name badge will indicate that no picture should be used.

Member Spotlight

Camille has been quilting since she was 19 but doesn’t have a lot of her earlier quilts since they were usually gifted. She took a break from quilting in her early twenties and started again after she got married in 2009. She started to notice the modern quilt movement in early 2013-2014 and found herself moving towards it over traditional quilts. She joined CMQG in 2014 and has volunteered for almost every job in the guild. She is known for her beautiful bags that she makes. Her current interest is improv (no ruler) leaf blocks which she then embroiders.

Sue was inspired by her sisters who are both master quilters in her opinion and by her grandmother who never wasted anything which meant many, many scrap quilts. Her first quilt which she is still in the process of completing was done completely by hand. Her next projects were a Christmas dragon, a spring dragon, and a stuffy which were also completely hand-sewn. Sue indicated that she prefers hand sewing as she thinks sewing machines can be quite scary. She joined the guild in 2024 at the encouragement of Julie.

Program

Four speakers, Pattie, Dr. Colleen, Marianne, and JC, shared highlights from when they attended QuiltCon 2025. They provided insights on improv quilting and finding time for quilting, emphasizing the importance of planning, prioritizing, and protecting quilting time. They mentioned various featured artists and their unique approaches to quilt design. Each speaker shared pictures of personal favorite quilts displayed at the show, pointing out the unique designs, color palettes, group work, foundation paper piecing, improvisational techniques, and interesting stitching.

Get ’Er Done Project

Candy explained the new Get ’Er Done activity for those unfamiliar with the activity and encouraged those not involved to join the group. Ten members showed their completed #5 project on their Get ’Er Done list. Their names will be placed in the final cash drawing to be held in December. The project number drawn to be completed by the April meeting is #9.

QuiltCon 2025

Our quilt, Collective Madness, which was displayed at QuiltCon 2025, has returned home. Members had the opportunity to view the quilt at the meeting. Eventually, the quilt will be donated to the Benton County Historical Museum to be used as a fundraiser.

Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show 2026

April 30, 2025, is the final submission date for applications to the 2026 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Special Exhibit. The goal for CMQG is to submit 10 to 20 quilts in the exhibit. The unifying theme of the displayed CMQG quilts is “Honoring the Woman Farmer.” With this theme in mind, the quilts will be honoring women’s contributions to farming and anything evoking agriculture (plants, animals, soil, water). It was suggested that displayed quilts should be within a 40 to 50 inch size range and should incorporate modern quilt elements. In order to maintain cohesiveness, a color palette will be presented for the challenge at a future date.

Welcome 2025 Retreat

The Welcome 2025 Retreat will be held on March 29th and 30th from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at CPI in Philomath (6990 W Hills Rd, Philomath, OR). The primary focus will be on donation quilts, although members can work on any personal project. Approximately fifty kits are ready for participants to create quilts. Members may contact Mieke or Colleen for a kit or obtain a kit at the retreat.

Donation Quilts

Mieke read a thank-you note from Roslyn at Monarch on 4th. The note expressed gratitude for donation quilts of various sizes to the organization, which can bring a vital change to families. In December, Mieke had dropped off four quilts, and in January, another stack of four or five quilts to Monarch on 4th.

Quilts in the Garden

Beth invited CMQG to join MRQG in sponsoring the Quilts in the Garden to be held in June of 2026. The members of the CMQG accepted the invitation and will be sponsoring two of the five gardens at the event. Guild members Candy, Pattie, Mary Ann, and Kim volunteered to be on the committee to work with MRQG as they plan the activity.

Library of Things

JC reminded members that items in the Library of Things are available for members to borrow. She has added some rulers, quilting rulers, templates, and three sets of different color cards (AGF, Kona, and Moda Bella) to the library.

Show and Tell

Various members of the group shared their delightful quilting projects. In addition, members showed their scrappy triangles for the CMQG 2025 Block of the Month Challenge and their Get ’Er Done projects.

Book Club

The ZOOM book club event will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2025. The club will be reviewing Take My Hand, by Dolen Perkins-Valdez. Looking ahead, the April title will be West With the Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge.
