June 2024

The Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) Monthly Meeting began at 7pm June 13, 2024 with Colleen Powers presiding. This was a new type of hybrid meeting for us. Our speaker was present via Zoom. All but one attendee was in-person. Twenty-nine people attended, including one guest and one new member. The meeting was held at the Corvallis Museum in downtown Corvallis.

Program:

Deborah Boschert spoke on Exploring Art Quilt Collages. Deborah creates art quilt collages using a method she described as “Fabric, Paint. Stitch.” She fuses fabric pieces onto a background, paints using acrylic paint, and then stitches. Stitching encompasses free motion quilting, machine embroidery, and hand embroidery. She showed us many examples of her art quilts. Deborah’s presentation was in response to members’ desire to learn more about art quilts.

Personal Symbols in Art Quilt Collages Workshop:

Deborah Boschert will teach this workshop on June 29 via Zoom from 9am to 4pm. Deborah will share how she incorporates personal symbols into her art quilt collages. She’ll also share inspiring examples of other artists who use symbolic shapes and tips for developing your own visual language of personal symbols. The cost is $82 for members and $97 for non-members (including $2 service fee). Sign up on our website.

Art Quilt Collage Challenge:

The challenge is to create an art quilt collage using at least two of the following techniques discussed in Deborah’s lecture and workshop:

  • Drawing a shape of your own design onto fabric, cutting it out, then fusing it onto a background.

  • Cutting an image out of printed fabric and fusing onto a background (example: cutting out the image of a flower from a flowery printed fabric)

  • Drawing illegible “handwriting” on fabric with permanent pen

  • Applying paint using a foam stamp

  • Applying paint using a found object as a stamp (example: creating circles using a can dipped in paint)

  • Applying paint using a stencil

  • Machine embroidery / free motion quilting

  • Hand embroidery

The finished piece should have a perimeter of at least 24 inches and not more than 48 inches. The challenge is due at the September 12 meeting.

Community Project:

The guild made 117 napkins at the last Sew Day and gave them to Green Girl. Green Girl loans place settings (dishes, cutlery, etc.) to groups for events to minimize the use of disposables.

Scrap Bag:

Diana made a new bag for the CMQG Scrap Bag and Janet Kok checked it out this month. The member with the scrap bag takes what they want from it and adds what they can.

July Monthly Meeting:

We will have a lecture by Dr. Colleen Pokorny on the history of pre-cut fabrics. We will also have a pre-cut fabric swap and would like members to share during show-and-tell quilts they have made from pre-cuts.

QuiltCon Panel:

Joyce Loper spoke on her experiences at QuiltCon in Phoenix and showed photos.

QuiltCon Quilt:

The 2025 Community Outreach Challenge for guilds has a theme of lines and bars with a lovely palette of greens, peaches and a dark blue. Let Colleen know if you would like to help with this quilt.

Sisters Quilt Show:

We need more volunteers to help at our display. Please sign up to help with setup, take-down, and hosting. Contact Colleen Powers.

Book Club:

The book club meets monthly via Zoom at 7pm on the fourth Wednesday of the month, which is June 26. The June book is The Curse of the Boyfriend Sweater by Alana Okun. The July book is Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jaime Ford. Sign up through the website if you wish to participate.
