The Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) Monthly Meeting began at 7pm July 11, 2024 with Colleen Powers presiding. Twenty-four people attended. The meeting was held at the Corvallis Museum in downtown Corvallis.
Program:
Dr. Colleen Pokorny, an Assistant Professor of Apparel Design at Oregon State University and a CMQG member, spoke on the history of pre-cut fabrics. Moda has been a leader in pre-cuts. They make Charm packs (5-inch squares), Fat Quarter Bundles (18 inch by 21 inch), Jelly Rolls (2 ½ inch strips), Layer Cakes (10-inch squares) and have made other less successful pre-cuts. Originally Moda distributed five-inch sample fabric packs to stores as a marketing tool. Store owners said their customers would love to buy them. Moda responded and pre-cuts were born. The name derives from the Charm quilts that were popular in the 19th century. These quilts were made of squares, each square being unique. This was a fun and fascinating lecture covering not just pre-cuts but some background quilting history too.
Sisters Quilt Show:
Colleen and JC Briar go to Sisters Friday with the guild’s show quilts. Everybody who has a quilt in the show or who is volunteering at the show needs to sign a liability form. The show is on Saturday.
Farmers’ Market:
We will have an information booth at the Corvallis Farmers’ Market on Saturday, August 10.
August 8 Monthly Meeting:
This will be a Zoom only presentation as the Corvallis Museum is not available that day. Our speaker is Kristen Echols whose lecture is titled “A Lesson in Every Quilt.”
Virtual Workshop:
Kristen Echols is giving a workshop on Quilt as You Go Techniques. On the MQG website she says “Tired of wrestling a large quilt under your sewing machine? Learn the quilt-as-you-go method where each block is quilted individually. A special sashing technique is used to join the blocks after they are quilted and trimmed.” The workshop is on Saturday, August 17 from 9am to 1pm. The cost is $40.
Pre-cut Fabric Swap:
Members brought pre-cuts and swapped for other pre-cuts.
New website Member Directory:
We have a new member directory that will be managed by Ann Geyer, our webmaster. We would like photos of people.
Show and Tell:
S&T was a little different this time. Seven people showed quilts they had made from pre-cuts, four people showed quilts that will be displayed at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, and two people showed things they had recently made.
QuiltCon Quilt:
The 2025 Community Outreach Challenge for guilds has a theme of lines and bars with a lovely palette of greens, peaches and a dark blue. JC is leading this year’s creation and designed two similar quilts for the group’s consideration. Both require foundation piecing. The group voted to make the quilt that is a bit more difficult but more of a showstopper. JC will teach foundation piecing and we will make the blocks at the July and August in-person Sew Days.
Quilt Collage Challenge:
The challenge is to create an art quilt collage using at least two of the following techniques discussed in Deborah Boschert’s June 13th lecture and later workshop:
Drawing a shape of your own design onto fabric, cutting it out, then fusing it onto a background.
Cutting an image out of printed fabric and fusing onto a background. (example - cutting out the image of a flower from a flowery printed fabric)
Applying paint using a foam stamp
Applying paint using a found object as a stamp (example – creating circles using a can dipped in paint)
Applying paint using a stencil
Machine embroidery/ free motion quilting
Hand embroidery
Illegible handwriting using a pen with permanent ink such as a Micron pen.
The finished piece should have a perimeter of at least 24 inches and not more than 48 inches. The challenge is due at the September 12 meeting.
Book Club:
The book club meets monthly via Zoom at 7pm on the fourth Wednesday of the month, which is July 24. The July book is Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jaime Ford. The August book is The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin. Sign up through the website if you wish to participate.
