August 14, 2025

The August meeting of the Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) was conducted at the Corvallis Museum. Colleen, President, convened the meeting at 7:00 p.m. Sharon, substituting as the Membership Chair, welcomed the membership, three new members, and two visitors to the evening meeting. The guild process that members should follow to indicate preferences for photos to be shared on social media was explained to the audience. A red dot placed on your name badge will indicate that no picture should be used.

Program

The program for the month of August was “Sew Outside the Box: Hacks & Tools You Won’t Find in the Quilt Shop.” JC, Beth, Nancy, Susan, Carah, Julie, Alice, and Dr. Colleen, members of the guild, shared their favorite tools and hacks. Among some of the topics discussed were using a laser level; using make-up brushes; using magnetic bowls, sticks, and carpet cutter blades found in auto and hardware shops; ways to protect bobbins from unwinding; a unique style stiletto; uses for medicine bottles; and creating design walls.

In addition, Carah, Nancy, and Laurie shared their best-loved moments and pictures from the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show 2025. The final part of the program was the presentation of the Artist Identity Challenge. Sheila shared her “bear on a beach,” and Carah shared the stickers and labels that she uses for quilts.

Exhibit Opportunities

There are currently three opportunities for upcoming quilt display exhibits.

  • Unitarian Fellowship Exhibit, December 2025 - February 2026. Consider showing Christmas quilts in the back section for the month of December. Remember selling quilts is permitted.

  • Honoring the Woman Farmer Challenge, June 2026. Refer to the CMQG Challenges page.

  • Quilts in the Garden - June 2026.

Get ’Er Done Project

Several members showed their completed #4 project on their Get ’Er Done list. The names of the August Get ’Er Done participants will be placed in the final cash drawing to be held in December. Members may still join in the fun and be entered into the drawing for cash at the end of the year and have the satisfaction of finishing projects. To participate in the Get ’Er Done Project, contact Candy. The project number drawn to be completed by the September meeting is #8.

Donation Quilts

Members wishing to obtain a quilt kit for a donation quilt may contact Colleen or Mieke. Mieke will be establishing sew days on Tuesday, August 19th, and Thursday, August 28th, at her home for the purpose of working on donation quilt kits.

Library of Things

JC reminded members that items in the Library of Things are available for members to borrow. She has added some rulers, quilting rulers, templates, and three sets of different color cards (AGF, Kona, and Moda Bella) to the library. Members were reminded that a spreadsheet of available items in the Library of Things can be found on the guild’s website under the Resources section. The spreadsheet includes a photo along with a description of the item and the manufacturer. To check out or return items, come to a meeting or Sew Day, or contact JC.

Show and Tell

Various members of the group shared their delightful quilting projects. In addition, members showed their scrappy triangles for the CMQG 2025 Block of the Month Challenge, Community Quilts, and their Get ’Er Done projects.

Book Club

The ZOOM book club event will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. The club will be reviewing Persuasion by Jane Austen. Looking ahead, the September title will be Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier.
