The Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) Monthly Meeting began at 7pm August 8, 2024 with Colleen Powers presiding. Thirty people attended including one new member, Cassie Watters. The meeting was a Zoom-only meeting as our regular meeting place, the Corvallis Museum, was not available.
Program:
Kristen Echols spoke on “A Lesson in Every Quilt.” She spoke about her history as a quilter, showed slides of the quilts she has made over the years, and told of the lessons she learned as she made those quilts. Many of her quilts were made using the “quilt-as-you-go” technique. This is where a block is quilted before being joined to the adjacent blocks. She will teach that method at the August 17 workshop. She also showed examples of Seminole Quilting which is a piecing style. She recommended the book Reversible Quilts by Sharon Pederson for the “quilt-as-you-go” method and the book Simply Seminole by Dorothy Hanisko for Seminole quilting.
Quilt-as-You-Go Virtual Workshop:
Kristen Echols is giving a workshop on Quilt as You Go Techniques. On the MQG website she says “Tired of wrestling a large quilt under your sewing machine? Learn the quilt-as-you-go method where each block is quilted individually. A special sashing technique is used to join the blocks after they are quilted and trimmed.” The workshop is on Saturday, August 17 from 9am to 1pm. The cost is $40.
Farmers’ Market:
We will have an information booth at the Corvallis Farmers’ Market on Saturday, August 10, 9am to 1pm. Contact Colleen if you wish to help or just drop in. Please bring a chair and examples of modern quilts.
Sept 12 Monthly Meeting:
This will be a Zoom presentation at the Corvallis Museum. Our speaker is Laura Henneberry who will demonstrate PreQuilt, browser-based software for designing quilts. Colleen will show photos from the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show.
QuiltCon Quilt:
JC Briar is leading this project. Five of the twelve blocks have been made and the rest should be completed on the next Sew Day on August 18. It’s possible that the quilt top will be done at that meeting. At the Sept 12 meeting, attendees will have the chance to propose quilt designs for the quilt.
QuiltCon 2025 Group:
There is now a group for members planning on attending QuiltCon 2025. Sign up through the website.
Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show:
The Sister Quilt Show 2024 was a great success, and we would like to participate in next year’s show. SOQS 2025 will be their 50th anniversary and will be organized differently. They will set a theme and specifications but haven’t yet. Colleen will show photos from SOQS 2024 at the September meeting.
Elections:
We are looking for volunteers to serve on the board. Colleen and Joyce Loper have agreed to serve another year as president and membership chair. We need a vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. Please contact Colleen if you are willing to serve.
Quilt Collage Challenge:
The challenge is to create an art quilt collage using at least two of the following techniques discussed in Deborah Boschert’s June 13th lecture and later workshop:
Drawing a shape of your own design onto fabric, cutting it out, then fusing it onto a background.
Cutting an image out of printed fabric and fusing onto a background. (example - cutting out the image of a flower from a flowery printed fabric)
Applying paint using a foam stamp
Applying paint using a found object as a stamp (example – creating circles using a can dipped in paint)
Applying paint using a stencil
Machine embroidery/ free motion quilting
Hand embroidery
Illegible handwriting using a pen with permanent ink such as a Micron pen.
The finished piece should have a perimeter of at least 24 inches and not more than 48 inches. The challenge is due at the September 12 meeting.
Book Club:
The book club meets monthly via Zoom at 7pm on the fourth Wednesday of the month, which is August 28. The August book is Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin. The September book is The Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths. Sign up through the website if you wish to participate.
Hand Sewing Group:
The hand sewing group will meet at Colleen’s home instead of Pattie’s on Sept 1 from 10am to 1pm. Please RSVP to Colleen if you plan to attend.
Quiltopia:
This is an annual quilt show held in Salem on the first Friday-Saturday in November (Nov 1-2, 2024). They have encouraged us to enter quilts. There is an interesting challenge, to make a quilt wall-hanging inspired by a book. It must use some fabrics from a fabric packet sold by Good Vibes Quilt Shop, be 22 by 30 inches in size, have a hanging sleeve, and be submitted by Sept 20. The fabric packet is available online. See QuiltopiaOregon.com for details.
