April 10, 2025

The March meeting of the Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) was conducted at the Corvallis Historical Museum. Alice, Vice-President, convened the meeting at 7:00 p.m. with approximately 45 members in attendance. Joyce, Membership Chair, welcomed new CMQG members Luanne, Mary, and Lisa. Joyce also welcomed guests: Rachel, Diya, Lisa, and Jenn. Joyce informed the guild that a new system will be initiated for members to indicate preferences for photos to be shared on social media. A red dot placed on your name badge will indicate that no picture should be used.

Program

The program this month was presented by member, Mieke, who shared her Liberated Design Process. Mieke began her quilting journey making traditional blocks. She became interested in more untraditional approaches to design and color while working on a jelly roll race quilt. The design wasn’t working for her, so she decided to cut up the flimsy into blocks, cut the blocks into triangles, and finally sew them together again. Thus, came her first design suggestion — If you don’t like it, cut it up. Included in her discussion topics were flying geese, floating blocks, and wonky blocks using wedges. Mieke often places blocks on a design wall or floor to see how they might be arranged in an unusual pattern.

Mieke concluded her talk by offering guild members a challenge. Instructions for the challenge can be found on the CMQG’s website in the members area challenge section. Once the completed blocks have been returned to Mieke, she will use her Liberated Design Process to complete a comfort quilt for the guild.

Get ’Er Done Project

Candy explained the Get ’Er Done activity for those unfamiliar with the activity and encouraged those not involved to join the group. Several members showed their completed #9 project on their Get ’Er Done list. In addition, Candy commented that several other members had submitted a picture by email to show completion of their #9 project. The names of the April Get ’Er Done participants will be placed in the final cash drawing to be held in December. The project number drawn to be completed by the May meeting is #1.

Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show 2026

President Colleen submitted the guild’s application to the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Special Exhibit in 2026. The goal for CMQG is to submit 10 to 20 quilts in the exhibit. The unifying theme of the displayed CMQG quilts is “Honoring the Woman Farmer.” With this theme in mind, the quilts will be honoring women’s contributions to farming and anything evoking agriculture (plants, animals, soil, water). It was suggested that displayed quilts should be within a 24 to 40 inch size range and should incorporate at least one modern quilt element. In order to maintain cohesiveness, a color palette will be presented for the challenge at a future date. A committee, not the board members, will be formed to select which quilts will be included in the exhibit if we have more than 20 submissions. We will have this challenge even if we are not accepted into the Sisters show.

Welcome 2025 Retreat

The Welcome 2025 Retreat was held on March 29th and 30th at CPI in Philomath. At the event, twenty-six members worked on both donation quilts and personal projects. The fun retreat was so successful that the board is discussing having another retreat in October.

Donation Quilts

Members wishing to obtain a quilt kit for a donation quilt may contact Colleen or Mieke. The guild has been offered the opportunity to donate 14-16 quilts to Red Feather Ranch. These quilts will be given to women veterans at a retreat held in late May. If you have a quilt to donate for this event, please contact Colleen, Mieke, or Alice. Please note that there are no size restrictions on the donated quilt, and it does not need to have a Quilt of Valor theme.

Library of Things

JC reminded members that items in the Library of Things are available for members to borrow. She has added some rulers, quilting rulers, templates, and three sets of different color cards (AGF, Kona, and Moda Bella) to the library. Members were reminded that a spreadsheet of available items in the Library of Things can be found on the guild’s website under the general resources section. The spreadsheet includes a photo along with a description of the item and the manufacturer. To check out or return items, come to a meeting or Sew Day, or contact JC.

Show and Tell

Various members of the group shared their delightful quilting projects. In addition, members showed their scrappy triangles for the CMQG 2025 Block of the Month Challenge and their Get ’Er Done projects.

Book Club

The ZOOM book club event will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. The club will be reviewing West With the Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge. Looking ahead, the May title will be The Girl Who Wrote in Silk by Kelli Estes.
