The Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) Monthly Meeting began at 7pm November 14, 2024 as an in-person only meeting at the Corvallis Museum with Colleen Powers presiding. Thirty-five people attended, including one guest. The guild now has 75 members.
Program:
Nancy Mandel gave a presentation about Freddy Moran, an influential quilter known for her bold use of color. Moran’s signature saying was “Red is a neutral.” She started quilting when she was 60 and by the time she died in August 2024 at the age of 94, had made thousands of quilt tops (she hired others to do the quilting). A typical quilt was a scrap art quilt featuring bright pure colors, mainly prints, a few black and white prints, and often polka dots (sometimes all the fabrics had polka dots). At the end of her life, she was known for her wonky portrait quilts. To learn more, watch Freddy Moran’s House on YouTube or read one of her books: Freddy’s House by Freddy Moran or Collaborative Quilting by Freddy Moran and Gwen Marston.
Membership Renewals:
Dues are now $45. Members can renew their membership online or via a check. Renewals done online saves our webmaster, treasurer and membership chair a lot of work, and remember they are volunteers. Online renewals are paid through PayPal. You do not need to have a PayPal account to do this. For more information, go to our website.
Volunteer Spotlight:
Pattie Dix was our featured member. She has been our vice-president, membership chair, hand sewing host, and book club chair. She was our president for two years during the Covid epidemic and kept our guild active during those difficult times. She is also very active in other community organizations. Pattie encouraged members to volunteer as this is a good way to get to know people.
Library of Things:
JC Briar manages the LOT. It contains rulers, templates, scrap bags, and other quilting related objects. Members may borrow these things and keep them for a month. They can also contribute items which can then be borrowed by other members. JC will bring the LOT to our monthly meetings and to the in-person sew days. If you have borrowed items in the past and still have them, please return them. See the Resources page of the guild’s website for more information.
Quilt Rack:
Sara Power contributed a quilt display rack to the guild. The guild now has two.
Ultimate Finisher:
Marty Stower is handling this. Members can still sign up. Items should be finished by December 31.
Show and Tell:
Ten people displayed S&T items. This is always a fun part of the meeting, and we encourage people to bring their creations for us to see.
Programming Survey Results:
Twenty-nine people responded. Their quilting experience varied from one to 58 years with a total of 692. People were interested in various things, but particularly in improv, scrap use ideas, and art quilts.
Holiday Potluck and Party:
This is our annual holiday meeting. This year it will be at the museum on our regular meeting day, December 12, the second Thursday of the month, but at an earlier time. The meeting will start at 6:30. Please bring your own place setting, drink (alcohol is permitted), and a dish to share. Remember to bring the Elfster table runner gift exchange if you are participating. Members can also bring a mystery white elephant gift to give: if you bring one, you can take one. It should be quilt related. Colleen will send out an email with more information about the potluck and a sign-up sheet. The sign-up sheet will act as an RSVP. We need to know how many are coming to know how many tables and chairs to set up.
Donation Quilts:
Guild members made 25 donation quilts this year which were donated to Monarch on 4th. Colleen showed a slide show of these quilts. There are presently 35 donation quilt kits available. Contact Meike Vandenreek if you are interested in making a donation quilt from a kit.
Dr. Colleen Pokorny honored:
Colleen has had a quilt accepted at the upcoming meeting of the International Textile and Apparel Association in Long Beach, CA.
Karen Miller honored:
Karen is going to have an exhibition of her Katazome artwork at the Portland Japanese Garden. Katazome is the ancient art of Japanese stencil dying.
January meeting:
This will be a Zoom-only meeting with a lecture by Brita Nelson “Every Last Crumb, an Adventure in Scrap Quilting.”
Workshop:
We are offering a Zoom workshop by Nelson, “Crumbs to Quilts,” on Saturday, January 18th, 9am to 1pm. The cost is $40 for members plus a $1 service charge. Go to the website to purchase tickets.
Welcome 2025 Retreat:
This was a big success last year so we want to repeat it. It will be March 29 & 30 and will replace our usual in-person sew day. Donation quilts will again be the theme.
Book Club:
Usually, the book club meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month but this month it will meet on the third Wednesday, which is November 20. As usual it will be via Zoom at 7pm. The November book is The Color of Water by James McBride. December’s meeting will also be on the third Wednesday. The December book is My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante. Sign up through the website if you wish to participate.
