The Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) Monthly Meeting started at 7pm Oct 12, 2023, at the Corvallis Community Center with Colleen Powers presiding. Twenty-eight people attended in person and ten via Zoom.
Program: Pattie Dix gave a program on “What is Modern Quilting”. She used 44 quilts
by our members to illustrate the characteristics of modern quilts and how those contrast to traditional quilts. The quilts were beautiful and showed the large range of styles that encompass modern quilting.
Raffle Drawing: Christina Fox won a $25 gift certificate to Bolt Fabrics.
Election of officers: Colleen Powers, Camille Ainsworth, Nancy Mandel, and Diana
Finkenaur were elected to be president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer
respectively. Joyce Loper is membership chair and Marty Stowers is the Ultimate
Finisher chair. A committee consisting of Candy, Mieke, and Sara Power oversees
community quilts. Susan Clark will continue to run swaps. Pattie Dix coordinates the
small groups: hand sewing, book club, and virtual sew day. Diana Finkenaur leads the in-person sew day.
Social Media Position: We are in great need of a volunteer to manage the club’s social media. Contact Colleen or Camille if you are interested.
Show-and-tell: Seven people had S&T items. This is a fun activity every month. Bring
your S&T items to the meeting or send photos to CMQGphotos@gmail.com.
Community Quilts: The quilt that will be our entry at Quiltcon has its top finished,
primarily during Sew Days. A big thank you goes to Susan Clark for designing, preparing fabric and overseeing the piecing of the blocks. It is gorgeous and will now be quilted, bound and submitted to Quiltcon. The Mid-Valley Nurture Group at Monarch on 4th Street in Corvallis and possibly Samaritan Evergreen Hospice House in Albany will be the recipients of our charity items this year.
Holiday Swap: Susan announced that swappers will have their choice of making a
notebook cover, a chatelaine, or an open wide bag. She will send out details.
Dues: Dues are increasing to $40 in 2024 because MQG raised our dues, and also
because we continue to pay for meeting room rental (for now), our Zoom account, and our website. We have also cut back on the raffle.
Ultimate Finisher: Don’t forget that you can participate in the Ultimate Finisher contest. Sheets are $10 each and you can list up to ten projects on your sheet. You don’t need to list all ten projects in the beginning but can instead add projects to your list through the year. You need to let Lorna know when you add a project. UF sheets and checks are sent to Lorna. Participants have until January 2024 to complete their projects and they receive one ticket in the raffle for each completed project. At the January meeting there will be a drawing and the winner gets 50% of the pot, second place gets 30% and third gets 20%. See the website for details.
November Monthly Meeting: This is our annual make-and-take meeting. This year we will be making a felt ornament. Attendees should bring an embroidery needle, a six-inch ruler, an air-erasable marker, small scissors, and if possible, a beading needle and needle threaders. Other supplies will be provided.
December Monthly Meeting: This is our annual holiday party. This year we will be
meeting at Common Fields from 6 to 8pm.
January Modern Quilt Top Challenge: The challenge is to make a quilt top with a modern design, at least 60 inches in circumference, and with at least two of the following characteristics of a modern quilt: modern traditionalism, alternative grid work, expansive negative space, bold use of color and solid fabrics, improvisational piecing, minimalism, maximalism, and high contrast. We will display these quilt tops during show and tell at the January 11 meeting.
Book Club: The book club meets monthly via Zoom at 7pm on the last Wednesday of the month, which is October 25. This month’s book is A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende. The November book is Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano. Contact Pattie or Missy if you wish to participate.
