The Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) Monthly Meeting was at 7pm June 8,2023 with Camille Ainsworth presiding. This was a Zoom only meeting with 27 members plus the guest speaker attending.
Program: Libs Elliot of Toronto, Ontario Canada was our guest speaker. She told us about her journey as a quilter – how as a child she admired the quilts in her father’s antique store, then started making traditional quilts, and now has developed her own modern style. She designs quilts using software she wrote (with help from digital artist Joshua Davis) using the Processing Language. She enters the colors and blocks she wishes to use, and her program generates a random quilt design. She sells patterns, fabrics, classes, etc. on her website, libselliot.com She also designs fabrics for Andover Fabrics (andoverfabrics.com). This was a fun presentation where we saw lots of beautiful quilts and learned of a new way to design quilts.
Raffle Drawing: Our speaker generously contributed $50 for our raffle. Joyce and Julie each won a $25 gift certificate to libselliot.com.
Show-and-tell: Three members had Show-and-Tell items this month, Donna, Missy, and Sara P. We all enjoy seeing what our fellow quilters are doing so please share. Either bring your S&T items to the meeting or send photos to CMQGphotos@gmail.com.
Quilt Exhibit at Philomath Museum: We will be exhibiting quilts from July 29 through September 9 at the museum. Quilts that were exhibited at the Corvallis Museum last year will not be accepted. Please bring your modern quilt to the July 13th meeting. If that is not possible, give them to Janet or Sheila before July 20. Our exhibit will also feature pieces from our 12 x 12-inch monochromatic mini-quilt challenge. All entries must have a hanging sleeve on the back. Contact Janet for information.
Monochromatic Mini-Quilt Challenge: The challenge is to make a 12 x 12-inch, monochrome quilt. A monochrome quilt has two or more shades of a single hue. Yellow-green, Kelly green, and blue-green are different hues andth erefore cannot be together in a monochrome quilt. White, gray, and black are not permitted except in a monochrome quilt with each other. Tone-on- tone prints are permitted since these only contain different shades of one hue. These are completed quilts with hanging sleeves. Please bring quilts to the July 13th meeting. Contact Janet for more information.
July Monthly Meeting: Diana will make a presentation on quilt coats. The 12½ inch swap challenge blocks are due and the 12-inch challenge quilts and other entries for the quilt exhibit should be brought to the meeting.
Swap Challenge: Susan leads this. Members exchanged “ugly” fabrics at the May meeting. Participants are making 12 ½ inch blocks with their received fabric which will be swapped in July. These are blocks, not quilts. Put your block and left over fabric into the paper bag with your name and the name of the person who provided the fabric written on the bag.
Ultimate Finisher: Don’t forget that you can participate in the Ultimate Finisher contest. Sheets are $10 each and you can list up to ten projects on your sheet. You don’t need to list all ten projects in the beginning but can instead add projects to your list through the year. You just need to let Lorna know when you add a project. UF sheets and checks are sent to Lorna. See the website for details.
Potluck Picnic: Pattie D is hosting a potluck picnic on July 29 at her home for members and their families. She will provide burgers and hot dogs. There will be a sign-up and more information later.
Book Club: The book club meets monthly at 7pm on the last Wednesday of the month, which is June 28. This month’s book is The Shadows of London by Nick Jones. It is the second of a series which started with And Then She Vanished. The July book is The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Johansson and the August book is Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. Contact Janet if you wish to participate.
