August 2023

The Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) Monthly Meeting was at 7pm August 10, 2023 at the Corvallis Community Center with Camille Ainsworth presiding.  About 20 people attended.

Program: Pattie, Missy, and Diana talked about EPP (English Paper Piecing) and did a trunk show of projects they had made or were in progress. EPP is a traditional method of piecing a quilt where fabric is wrapped around paper templates and handstitched.

Mary’s River Quilt Guild: Derrith reminded everyone that CMQG and modern quilts will be the topic of the Marys River Quilt Guild program at their August meeting on Thursday, August 24th at 7pm. They meet at the Benton County Historical Society Philomath Museum on the 2nd floor. CMQG members are encouraged to attend to talk about their pieces in the show during break time. Arrive at 6pm for the fabric sale. For $5 you can fill a gallon plastic bag with as much fabric as you want although it must close. New Member: Pattie introduced Beth Rietveld, a new member attending for the first time.

Raffle Drawing: Beth Rietveld and Candy Wigton were the winners. They each won $25 gift certificates to The Cotton Patch.

Show-and-tell: Five people had S&T items. This is a fun activity every month. Bring your Show and Tell items to the meeting or send photos to CMQGphotos@gmail.com.

Quilt Exhibit at Philomath Museum: We are exhibiting quilts from July 29 through September 9 at the museum. There was a reception on July 28 that many members attended. The exhibit looks fabulous.

Community Quilt: Susan Clark announced the MQG Community Quilt Design and took sign-ups for making blocks assembly line style at our August & September in person sew days at CPI. August 20th and September 17th.

Swap Challenge: Susan leads this. Members exchanged “ugly” fabrics at the May meeting, made them into 12 ½ inch blocks and then exchanged these at the July meeting. Participants will now make these into quilt tops and give them to the original ugly fabric owner at the September meeting.

Ultimate Finisher: Don’t forget that you can participate in the Ultimate Finisher contest. Sheets are $10 each and you can list up to ten projects on your sheet. You don’t need to list all ten projects in the beginning but can instead add projects to your list through the year. You just need to let Lorna know when you add a project. UF sheets and checks are sent to Lorna. See the website for details.

September Monthly Meeting: Nancy M will be speaking on Tucker Templates and we will have the final swap of the ugly fabric swap.

Volunteers needed at events: Volunteers are needed to help man the information booths at the Corvallis Farmer’s Market (August 19). Contact Camille to volunteer.

Book Club: The book club meets monthly at 7pm on the last Wednesday of the month, which is August 30. This month’s book is Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. Contact Janet or Missy if you wish to participate. Members can participate in just one month if there is a particular book they are interested in.

CMQG Officers: We are also looking for volunteers to join the Board of the CMQG. Several areas of need are 2-3 members for our new Community Quilts Committee, Social Media, and someone who would like to move into the Membership role as next year will be Pattie’s last year on the board.
