The Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) Monthly Meeting started via Zoom at 7pm, June 9, 2022, with Missy and Camille presiding. 25 people attended including one guest.
Speakers: Our speakers were our own members that attended Quiltcon this year. Quiltcon is the Modern Quilt Guild’s annual national convention. It was held in Phoenix in February and several of our members attended. Caroline, Joyce, Kim, Diana, and Susan shared photos of their favorite quilts at Quiltcon. There was such a huge variety of wonderful quilts that there were no quilts in common among their selections.
Quiltcon 2023: Several of our members are planning to go to Quiltcon 2023 which will be in Atlanta in February. Even if you don’t go you can enter quilts in the show. In particular, the Windham Ruby+Bee Challenge features quilts using at least four of six solid fabrics by Ross and Wrigley. Winter Fabrics, owned by CMQG member Dana McCluer carries those fabrics. The theme of this year’s MQG Community Challenge quilts is Gradient. Our quilt will use the yellow to blue shift. Diana has volunteered to design the quilt.
No July Meeting: There is no July Meeting to allow members to attend classes at Quilters Affair in Sisters that week, culminating in the show on July 9.
Swap with Central Oregon MQG: We are going to swap Noodleheads Open Wide Zip Pouches. This is a free pattern on the Noodlehead website. If you plan on attending Sisters and think you will want to swap, please send Camille an email to let her know. She would like to get a rough count of attendance. This will be a blind swap, that is there will be no assigned recipients. Even if you don’t want to swap, you are welcome to come and just hang out. This is on Saturday, July 9 at 10:30am in Washington Park.
Raffle winners: Lynn, Christina, Joyce, and Amber were this month’s raffle winners.
Display at Museum: We have been invited to exhibit our quilts at the Corvallis Museum from July 15 to October 2. This is a great opportunity to educate the public about modern quilting. The museum curator needs to know what quilts to expect to plan the display. Janet sent a form to fill out if you wish to participate. Please send it to her at by June 14. Quilts must have hanging sleeve.
Demos at Museum: We have been invited to give demonstrations in the Museum during the July and August Art Walks. Art Walks are on the third Thursday of each month which will be July 21 and August 18.
Community Quilts: The next community quilt has pinwheel blocks in various sizes and features a blue print fabric. We need members to make 16 inch, 12 inch, and 6 inch blocks. Janet will supply more information. A previous community quilt, the Mary’s Peak Quilt, was given to the Corvallis Museum and will be raffled off after being displayed.
Block of the Month (BOTM) for August: Lorna is leading this activity. We are making blocks from the book Quilt Improv by Lucie Summers. Our fifth block was Crazy Triangles on page 22 and our sixth block is Cross Block on page 24. Participants will display their blocks during show-and-tell in August. This is a fun challenge. We will be meeting in person in August so please bring your blocks to the meeting.
Sew Day: Sew Days are now both in person and online. The On-line Sew Days will be via Zoom on the second Saturdays of each month and the in- person Sew Days will be at Consumer Power on the 4th Saturday. Diana will speak on quilt coats at the June 25 in-person Sew Day.
Book Club: The book club meets monthly at 7pm on the last Wednesday of the month which is June 29. This month’s book is The Little French Bistro by Nina George. Next month’s book is Stardust by Neil Gaiman. Contact Janet if you wish to participate.
Hand Sewing Groups: We have started this activity again and have one group in Corvallis and one in Albany. This is a great way to meet fellow members and have an opportunity for casual conversation. The Corvallis group meets on the first Sunday of the month (July 3) at Pattie’s and the Albany group on the third Saturday (June 18) at Draper Park (across the street from Carol Terrill’s house).
August Monthly Meeting: This will be an in-person meeting on August 11 at 7pm at Chintimini Park near the Corvallis Community Center. Erica Jackman of Kitchen Table Quilting will be doing a trunk show of quilts. Please bring a camp chair or quilt to sit on. Show and Tell will be in person instead of with photos.
August Swap: This will be an in-person blind swap. There will be no assigned recipients via Elfster. The swap item will be four coasters, four to five inches in size. They don’t need to be identical but should coordinate. Bring them in a plain brown paper bag. Susan C. is heading this activity. Out-of-town members can participate using Susan as a proxy.
Community Booth at Farmer’s Market: On August 27, we will be at the Corvallis Farmer’s Market and will have a jelly roll race charity quilt contest and demo.
The meeting ended at 8:30.
