April 2024

The Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) Monthly Meeting began at 7pm April 11, 2024, as a Zoom-only meeting with Colleen Powers presiding. Forty people attended, including four guests and one new member, Marc Kemper. Welcome to the club Marc.

Program:

Minimal Design, Maximum Impact. David Owen Hastings, our guest speaker, is a well-known quilter and quilt educator who resides in Sequim, Washington. He spoke to us on designing modern quilts. First, he defined what makes a quilt modern and presented a history of modern quilts. There are 100-year-old quilts with what we would consider a modern design. Next, he presented the works of three exceptional modern quilters (Gwen Marston, Bill Kerr & Weeks Ringle, and Carson Converse). Then he advised us on where we could find inspiration for our own quilts. Lastly, he answered our questions. It was a wonderful presentation.

Quilt As Desired Workshop:

This class was canceled because too few members signed up. It will be rescheduled if there is enough interest.

May Monthly Meeting:

Karen Miller will speak on art quilts and her own journey as a quilter. Karen has made many beautiful quilts and is a member of the Valley South Chapter of Studio Art Quilt Associates, SAQA. The Corvallis Community Center might be unavailable for the May meeting. If this happens the meeting will be at the Corvallis Museum instead. Members will be advised.

Inspired by Art Workshop:

This workshop is taught by David Owen Hastings. He describes the workshop as “Starting with a favorite work of art, develop your own unique modern quilt design. Be inspired by shapes, colors, structure, or the feeling you get and design a block or whole quilt with an eye on modern minimalism.” The workshop will be 9:00 to 3:00 on Saturday, April 13.

Future meetings:

Colleen and JC Briar are planning the meetings for the rest of the year and into 2025. If you have any ideas for meeting topics, let them know. Beginning in August, the Corvallis Museum will be our regular meeting place. We don’t normally have a monthly meeting in July because it conflicts with the Sisters Quilt Show, however if there is sufficient interest, we could have one, at a location to be determined. We did have a July meeting in 2023.

Book Club:

The book club meets monthly via Zoom at 7pm on the last Wednesday of the month, which is April 24.  This month’s book is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. The May book is The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner. Contact Pattie Dix if you wish to participate.
